Happy Fall! October is Respect Life month in the Catholic Church. Cardinal Timothy Dolan provides an outstanding explanation on how we, as a people of faith, should not have fear in the face of so much suffering and uncertainty. I encourage you to take a few minutes and read his statement
. His statement is certainly timely.
I invite you and your family out to our Homecoming game versus St. Benedict on Friday, October 13. Please come early as we plan to crown our Blessed Mother on the 100th anniversary of the apparitions in Fatima, Portugal as part of our pre-game prayer. Representatives from both schools will lead us in prayer as we crown the Queen of Heaven prior to the game. You can read and learn more about the apparitions at Fatima here.
As we begin the 2nd quarter of the academic year, I am grateful for your continued support. Our annual PAGE is on-going and your generous support is greatly appreciated. Your gift helps us maintain an affordable tuition and an extra-curricular experience in athletics, arts, and student leadership that is unmatched. On behalf of our student body, I thank you for considering a gift to the Annual Fund. If you should have any questions regarding the annual fund, please read more information here or e-mail Mr. John Goode ’07 at email@example.com
Please be alert to parent-teacher conferences and the Parent Association meeting on October 25. We will send out a sign-up form for teacher conferences after Fall Break. The month of October sees the Fall sports winding down and Winter sports gearing up. Football will look to continue its terrific season with two home games (Oct. 13 and Oct. 20) and then a visit to Park and Ridgeway for a crucial contest! Coach McDaniel and his entire staff on all levels have done an excellent job with the 150 young men that participate in Football. The culture and values that are displayed are appreciated by our CBHS Community.
Our Golf team competed in the Region tournament on Monday, October 2 at Windyke Country Club. Hopefully, we will qualify for the State tournament the following week in Manchester, TN. Our Cross Country athletes continue to endlessly train – early in the mornings and late in the evenings! Their Region meet is October 14 and the State Meet in Nashville is November 4.
Coach Laura Madsen will once again lead our Bowling team. This year’s squad seems to be strong and senior-laden as they look to improve upon their State Runner-up finish from last season. Matches begin in late October and the season concludes at the State Tournament on January 19.

The CBHS counseling staff would like to welcome the returning families back for the 2017-2018 school year.
I am sure we are all looking forward to the cooler fall weather because that means fall break is near as well. A couple of days off are well deserved and it will give our students a chance to recharge their batteries before the national test day.
The PSAT will be administered to all CBHS students on Wednesday, October 25th. Please make a note that that day we will begin school at 8:00. Your sons will report to their homeroom for the test and school will be dismissed at 12:00. Freshmen will be taking the PSAT 8/9. Sophomores and juniors will be taking the PSAT/NMSQT. Just as a reminder, the sophomores PSAT is just for practice and their scores will not be reported nor will those scores be used in any scholarship competition. The scores of the juniors are the scores that count. PSAT provides sophomores and juniors with practice PSAT booklets that will be distributed to them the week before the test date. Encourage your son to review the material and take the practice test before the actual test day. PSAT does not provide practice tests for the PSAT 8/9. However, if your son would like he can go to the College Board website to review the types of questions he will see on the PSAT 8/9. The website is https://collegereadiness.collegeboard.org/psat-8-9.
October 25th will also be the night for the Parent-Teacher conferences. You will be able to login to your account and register to see your son’s teachers the week of Oct. 16th. This will give you the opportunity to ask specific questions and get direct information regarding how your son is doing.
The college counselors will be hosting the “Donut Stress” sessions for parents from 8:30 – 9:30am Friday, Oct. 27, Friday, Dec. 1, Friday, Feb. 23 and Friday, March 23. The location of the October meeting will be posted soon. The sessions are open to any parent of any student, not just seniors but you must RSVP by emailing Mrs. Mistretta at Pmistretta@cbhs.org or Mr. Callicott at Jcallicott@cbhs.org the day before. And, as the name implies, there will be donuts and other assorted breakfast pastries.
Don’t forget to follow us on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter for up-to-date information about colleges visiting our campus, ACT/SAT workshop and important dates such as ACT/SAT registration deadlines. The next ACT will be on October 28th. There is still time to sign-up for this test. Late registration is open until October 6th. The next ACT testing will be December 9th. The next available SAT test day is November 4th. Regular registration closes October 5th, however late registration is open until October 25th.
As always, if there is anything that we can help you with, please don’t hesitate to call.

The young boys who enter CBHS are challenged to grow into young men of faith and character. Throughout their experience as a Brothers’ Boy they will learn about the Brothers’ Way—a set of virtues that each Brothers’ Boy should embody in his life. Each month throughout the school year, teachers and students will focus on a different virtue in order to expand their understanding of themselves and the world around them. These virtues each connects to one of the 5 Lasallian Core Principles.
The months of October and November, we focus specifically the Lasallian principle—Respect for All Persons
: The Lasallian Core Principle of Respect for all Persons: Filled with humility, we esteem others more than ourselves, and seek to love all God’s people.
Respect for all persons begins in October with the virtue of humility. Although no one is perfect, we should always strive to respect them as a beloved child of God. God’s love is unconditional. We do not earn it; that’s humbling. The virtue of humility fosters the disposition that recognizes the inherent dignity and respect for persons. This month students will watch a short video from Tony Dungy and discuss why this virtue, somewhat counterculture in our society, is an important one to have. Please take some time to discuss the virtue of humility with your son this October.
Prayer of Humility
Lord Jesus, when You walked the earth, Your humility obscured Your Kingship. Your meekness confused the arrogant, hindering them from grasping Your purpose, Your nobleness attending to the destitute. Teach me to model after Your eminence, to subject my human nature to humility. Grant me a with a natural inclination to never view myself greater than anyone. Banish all lingering sparks of self-importance that could elevate me greater than You. Let my heart always imitate Your humility! Amen.
Lasallian Days of Peace
From September 21-October 21 the Lasallian Community will celebrate the 11th annual Lasallian Days of Peace. During this month, Young Lasallians from all over the world are invited to celebrate peace through concrete means, while focusing on a specific theme every year. This year’s theme is: Peace Without Limits. Throughout the month, we will be focusing on this theme as a community at CBHS.
Respect Life Month
During the month of October, the Catholic Church across the United States observes Respect Life Month. This is a time to renew a dedication to all human life and pray for life to be respected from conception to natural death. On Thursday, Oct. 5, the CBHS student body will participate in a Pro-Life prayer service. Part of the service will include a speaker from the Life Training Institute. Throughout this month we will continue to pray for an end to abortion and increased respect for human life.
Our Lady of Fatima
October 13, 2017 will be the 100th anniversary of the last appearance of Our Lady of Fatima to Lucia, Francisco, and Jacinto, young children in Portugal. To commemorate that occasion, we will have a special prayer service before the football game that evening against St. Benedict. Please plan to be in the stadium early to join in this special prayer.
Senior Day of Service
As a part of our focus on the core principle, Respect for All Persons, on Wednesday, October 25, the senior class will participate in a day of service. That morning while all the underclassmen are taking the PSAT test, the seniors will be sent out to approximately fifteen different work sites throughout the city of Memphis to complete service projects. Seniors will gather in Heffernan Hall at 8 am for an opening prayer and breakfast. They will return to school for dismissal at 1 pm. Please pray for our seniors and their experience that day as they go out and serve the Memphis community.
