LIMITED PARKING AVAILABLE

Because of the ongoing construction, the increased number of students, and the growing number of students driving, there is a limited amount of parking on the CBHS campus. Thus, we ask for everyone's patience, attentiveness, and awareness when maneuvering around the parking lots.

From Principal

Chris Fay

On Sunday, we will celebrate Palm Sunday in the Catholic Church. The Gospel of Matthew tells us the story of Jesus and his Twelve Apostles at the Last Supper at which Peter assures Jesus that his faith would not be shaken on this night. I love Jesus’ response in which he tells Peter, “this very night before the cock crows, you will deny me three times.” Peter subsequently denies Jesus three times before the cock crows as Jesus foretold.

Jesus’ response to Peter is His response to all of us. He sees all of our faults, weaknesses, and blind spots and still loves us unconditionally. He forgave Peter before Peter denied Him, as He predicted. Just as Jesus knew Peter would deny him three times, He knows all of our shortcomings, and He sees all of our proverbial warts and continues to love us anyway.

As we begin this month of April, I pray that we can love each another unconditionally. This weekend as we prepare for either Passover or for Holy Week, we are reminded of the joy and hope that authentic love and forgiveness can bring to our neighbors. We wish all of our Jewish families a joyful Passover and to all of our Christian families, we wish you a Joyful Easter season!

God Bless,

Chris Fay

LENTEN REFLECTIONS are published daily on the CBHS website. In the words of Brother Chris Englert, FSC, "Over the next 40 days, we will follow the journeys of alumni, faculty, students and friends. Their struggles, insights, and faith can be sources of support and inspiration as we examine our own lives in preparation for Easter Sunday."

- ACADEMICS -

Minimize

From: Dr. Jamie Brummer, Dean of Academics

Spring is a very busy time at CBHS, with a multitude of academic, athletic, and co-curricular events keeping the campus buzzing at all times. Seniors, in the last quarter of their high school experience, are preparing for graduation and trying to take advantage of every moment that remains; Juniors are getting serious about the college application process; Sophomores and Freshmen are paying more attention to their GPA’s as they realize that they have started to build the academic house they will live in for years to come. Everyone is battling Spring fever!

Here are some important dates on the Academic calendar for the month of April:

- SCHOOL COUNSELING -

From Jeff Blancett, Director of Counseling Services

We are in the home stretch of the school year and in just two months we will break for the summer vacation. Even though we only have two months left, there is still a lot left to do. Remember to encourage your son to finish the year strong. There is still 60% of the grade left to earn this semester (40% for the 4th quarter and 20% for the semester exams).

The counselors are finishing up the scheduling process for the next academic year and hope to have all the scheduling conflicts resolved by the end of April. If you have not logged in to see your son’s course selections for next year, it is not too late. Go to his CBHS webpage and click on Academics and the click on Course Requests. If you have any questions about your son’s selection, email his counselor.

The last ACT hosted at CBHS will be April 8th. There will be one more national ACT testing date, June 10, 2017. However, CBHS will not serve as a test site. The first test date for the 2017-2018 school year will be September 9, 2017. This summer might be a good time to spend a little time with a preparing for the test.

On April 10, one of our counselors, Mr. Jim Pletcher will be hosting an information session for students and parents that are interested in playing collegiate athletics. Mr. Pletcher is a former NCAA football coach having coached at the Division I, Division II and Ivy leagues. Coach Pletcher has been on both sides of the recruiting process. He has recruited players and has had players recruited. He brings a wealth of knowledge of how the process works. The topics to be covered are procedures for becoming a recruit, understanding the recruiting process, differences between all divisions (NCAA, NAIA and Junior college), and taking ownership of the recruitment process. The meeting will be in the auditorium at 7:00pm.

I know many of you have had Ms. Jones in your thoughts and prayers and those prayers are paying off. Ms. Jones continues to improve and her treatments are showing very positive results. Please keep her in your prayers.

As always, if the counseling staff can be of any service to you or your son, please don’t hesitate to contact us.

- LASALLIAN WAY OF LIFE -

From: Lindsey Neuman, Lasallian Animator

Words from St. John Baptist de la Salle

“Keep the goals of your work as clear as those of Jesus Christ, so that you will draw his blessing and grace upon yourself and all your labours.”

The Brothers’ Way

The young boys who enter CBHS are challenged to grow into young men of faith and character. Throughout their experience as a Brothers’ Boy, they will learn about the Brothers’ Way—a set of virtues that each Brothers’ Boy should embody in his life. Each month throughout the school year, teachers and students will focus on a different virtue in order to expand their understanding of themselves and the world around them. These virtues each connect to one of the 5 Lasallian Core Principles.

During the months of April and May, we focus specifically on the Lasallian Core Principle—Quality Education. The purpose of CBHS is to educate students and encourage them to become life-long learners constantly striving to improve themselves. During April, the Brothers’ Way virtue is integrity. Students will focus on the virtue of integrity and discuss how integrity plays a vital role not only in their education but also in the development of their character. In their advisories, they will discuss the importance of making good decisions and maintaining their integrity in all their actions. Watch this video for an informative description of integrity and its importance in our society. Take some time this month to discuss integrity and its significance with your son.

Prayer for Integrity

Spirit of Truth, give me the strength and courage to act and speak with integrity. Help me to be honest and truthful as I carry out my roles and responsibilities. May I strive to be one who holds fast to the inner compass of conscience, thereby holding to my promises and commitments. Guide me in all my ways, and let me walk each day in integrity. Amen.

Founder's Week

April 3-7, the CBHS community will celebrate Founder’s Week—a week remembering and celebrating St. John Baptist de La Salle’s vision and mission which led to the founding of the Brothers of the Christian Schools in France and now is a global network of schools to which CBHS belongs. There will be various activities throughout the week to celebrate including Founder’s Day mass on Friday—the feast day of St. John Baptist de La Salle—and a faculty/staff celebration of service during the faculty meeting on Wednesday. Please take a moment this week to offer a prayer of thanksgiving for the Lasallian Christian Brothers, their mission, and the influence they have had on young me in the city of Memphis since 1871.

Spring into Action

From March 15-April 30, Lasallians throughout the region are participating in Spring into Action—an initiative encouraging students to go out into their communities and complete service work. The faculty/staff of CBHS will join in the Spring into Action movement on Monday, April 17 with a morning of service work. Lasallian Youth will also participate in various service events throughout this time. Contact Dustin Perry (dperry@cbhs.org), the Lasallian Youth Moderator, for more information regarding this event.

April Masses

April holds many opportunities for our community at CBHS to join in prayer. Friday, April 7, is the feast day of St. John Baptist de La Salle. To celebrate this occasion, Monsignor John McArthur, AFSC, will join us for an All-School Mass. During that Mass, students will witness the 7 brothers who teach and work at CBHS renew their vows and promises to the Brothers’ Institute committing themselves to another year of serving students and following De La Salle’s mission. We will be on Morning Assembly schedule that day.

CBHS students will reflect on Holy Week with a House prayer service on Tuesday, April 11. We will be on a Morning Assembly schedule that day. During the assembly period, students will meet in their houses and go through a prayer, reflection, and discussion about Jesus’ trial before his death and resurrection.

After the Easter holidays, the CBHS community will celebrate Easter season with an Easter Mass. We will be on Morning Assembly schedule that day.

Thursday Morning Masses

We will continue offering Mass every Thursday morning at 7:20 am in the Brothers’ chapel. Each week the Mass will be offered for the intentions of a different organization or team on campus, but all are welcome to attend.

Thursday, April 6, Mass will be said for the intentions of the language clubs.
Thursday, April 20, Mass will be said for the intentions of the baseball teams.
Thursday, April 27, Mass will be said for the intentions of Clement House.

St. John Baptist de La Salle. Pray for us.
Live Jesus in our hearts. Forever.

- ATHLETICS -

From Mike Kelly, Director of Athletics

April is BUSY! All eight of our Spring sports are in the heart of their seasons. The push is on to compete, improve, and secure playoff spots in order to gain the best seeding for post season play. Our athletes are learning valuable life lessons as they enjoy High School competition. Mark your calendar to get out to an event and support our athletes. The uncertain Memphis weather always plays havoc with schedules – cancellations and make-up dates! Please consult the school website or the individual team websites or twitter to verify game times.

As you plan ahead, two important reminders:
Wednesday, May 3 4:00 PM – Campbell Clinic will provide FREE physicals for CBHS students
Sunday, June 25 – Saturday July 8 – TSSAA Dead Period No coaching, observing, or contact between coach and players in sport involved. There is no practice, no open facilities, and no weight training/conditioning.
